San Jose

As 2.5 days driving from San Jose to Vancouver is always same when we make Around Continent Driving, the first day from San Jose to Grants Pass, Oregon, was same driving as 2 months ago when we had 9th. Around Continental Driving. However, it was the first experience to rent a car and this latest version of the car was so different from our cars 20 years old. I had a lot of hard time to drive it. First of all, there were so many strange buttons which I could not understand what they are mostly. Avis rent car co. did not give the manual which made me practically impossible to guess the functions of most of them and gave me really hard time as I had to guess anyway regardless possible or impossible. The hardest problem was to find where is the Cigarette Lighter, as I needed power source for D-Star communicator and a Navigator which the car didn't have. I have looked around front part everywhere many times but it was not anywhere. Now, I have looked at the back of the front seats and saw a small square cover which was found out to be a Cigarette Lighter finally !! I wonder what kind of anti-smoker have designed this car? Lately, everyone use electronic equipment in the car which requires electric power source, not only for cigarettes, and some of the latest car has USB outlets in the car. What kind of stupid strong ant-smoker has designed this car? Does this means front passengers should not smoke while back seat passengers may smoke? Because of this stupid strong anti-smoking designer, I have had too much hard time and wasted quite a time to find it finally.

Anyway, after tried various buttons with the best guess, I have connected D-Star Communicator and my Navigator to the Cigarette Lighter at the back of front seats and started to operate this wonderful car. Now, not only the gas tank was displayed by the miles further to drive with remaining gas rather than normal gas tank level display, which has confused me, the lid of gas tank was closed tightly and there was no switch to open it. I have searched whole car to open the lid of gas tank again and again, but there was no button or switch to open it. Well, at the gas station, I asked a help from attendance there. AND he pushed a corner of the lid and it was open !!!! This is what we call "The egg of Columbus". hi hi.

Now, I could fill the gas tank and drove Mountain Shasta, which had so many winding uphill mountain roads with single lane for the most of the time. Due to slow trucks, we had to drive very slowly usually until passing lane shows up, where we had to accelerate pushing pedal in full. However, there were 3 lanes many places now and we could drive in full speed. Therefore, there was not many cars driving on the highway. Well, road was wide, not too many cars, the car was new car quietly accelerating well.... If I accelerate little, the car was running at 80-85 MPH easily at the speed limit of 65MPH!!! Many times, I didn't realize the car was running at 95 MPH, or even faster than 100 MPH frequently, as the car was running so quietly without much engine noise. Therefore, I could drive this mountain road quite faster arriving destination much earlier. Since this is mountain road without village around with not too many cars driving, it seems there is no police car patrolling around and, fortunately, I didn't get any ticket.!! hi hi

As the result, we left home about 50 min. later than plan but arrived only 5 min. late to Grants Pass where we went 1st. class restaurant in this mountains "Taprock" as usual for the great dinner.

On the 2nd. day of 9/26, we usually went to ex-HM1CC (former HM1CC ) Cho YL's(Young Lady's) house in Whidbey Island taking ferry from Seattle. However, this time, Cho YL went a trip and was not at home. Therefore, we stopped at Tacoma city, south of Seattle where we arrived very early at 3:00 PM as we don't need to take ferry to Whidbey Island and could take a good rest for the day.

However, this wonderful Avis rent car has caused another serious problem on the 3rd. day of 9/27 in Vancouver. Original plan was to leave Tacoma at 08:00 AM, arrive Immigration Office at U.S.A./Canada border line 2 hours later at the latest by 10:00 AM as it is only 140 miles away. It is uncertain how long it would take to pass the Immigration Office usually as it depends how many cars are lined up there waiting. Assuming it will take one hour at most, we will be at Avis Vancouver location to return the car by noon at the latest, most likely earlier. I was going to meet VA7YM Min OM (Old Man. not by age. Mr.) there at 12:00 noon, return the car, move luggage to his car, have lunch together and go to pier for Holland America Line cruise ship by 2:00 PM which will depart the pier at 4:00 PM. I thought I had plenty of time allowance to this plan.

Now, we left Tacoma on time at 08:00 AM according to the plan. However, it was the terrible morning rush hour of Seattle, took one and half an hour just to cross the Seattle from south to north and arrived the Immigration Office at almost 10:00 AM, more than 1.5 hours later. Fortunately, there was no car waiting and we could cross the border in just 10 min. saving quite a time we wasted in Seattle. Since uncertainty is over, I called Min OM over the phone and told him we will arrive Avis little earlier than 12:00 noon perhaps. Min OM told me he will leave home immediately to arrive Avis little earlier also.

It was OK by this time. However, the problem was the Avis located in the middle of very crowded downtown of Vancouver. The Avis office was so small and the sign was hard to find. Besides, the entrance to return the car was not clearly marked through the entrance of a hotel at very next door. I have missed the entrance and passed it. Thereafter, it was continuous one way with every intersection with "NO LEFT TURN". It took another hour just to return to Avis office back where Min OM has arrived one hour earlier waiting for me. By his help, I could finally return the car, moved our luggage to his car and went for lunch after 1:00 PM, more than an hour later than plan. Because there was no enough time, we went to Denny's as we found at the street, had simple lunch and could arrive to the pier where our cruise ship is, by 2:00 PM barely. I don't know how possibly we could get to the pier on time without Min OM's help. I really appreciate his great help in Vancouver. We might even have missed the cruise without him. Many many many thanks Min OM!!!
