9th. Driving
Trip around N. A. Continent
crossing 18 times.
7/6 - 8/6, 2017
(Part-4 Á¦4ºÎ)
We are going to
drive around North American Continent again - our 9th. drive around - during
7/6 - 8/6 (one month). By this driving, we will achieve 18 times of crossing
the continent. We would like to have another one next year to achieve 10
times of driving around the continent in our life, though we are not sure
whether we could do it next year or not ??????

As this trip was the same
trip as the last year to visit Korean ham radio friends, there are some ham
radio languages which can not be understood by non-ham readers. They look
like secret codes but they are not. They are all official telegraphic codes
used by all radio operators including commercial radio operators too. There
are two kinds of codes - one is telegraphic codes (abbreviations) and
Q-codes, both just to make telegraphic transmissions shorter and easier.
Here are a few of them used very frequently by ham radio operators.
YL - Young Lady (This does
not mean by age. All women are YLs. There is no code of OL=Old Lady. Why?
ask to ladies)
XYL = ex-YL. Previously YL Now "Wife".
OM = Old Man (Not old men by age, but by ham radio experience. This is also
used as Mr. to all men.)
YM/YB = Young Man/Young Boy (Again. Not by age, but by experience. there
could be 80 years old YB and 20 Years old OM)
73 = Good bye to Men. 88 = Good bye to women. (Sources of origin -
unknown)
hi hi = pronounced "hai hai". Laughing or smiling.
QSO = Contact/Talking,
QSY=Move, QTH=Location/Address, QRV=Ready, QRT=Stop/Discontinue,
QRX=Wait etc. etc.
±×¿Ü¿¡ ¾Æ¸¶Ãò¾îµéÀÇ È£ÃâºÎÈ£°¡ ¸¹ÀÌ ³ª¿À´Âµ¥, ÀÌ

Ç¥½ÃÇÕ´Ï´Ù ¿¹ÄÁµ¥ :
HL, DS, 6K = Korea (HM = 1960³â´ëÀÇ Ãʱ⿡´Â Çѱ¹ÀÇ ÀüÄ¡ºÎÈ£¿´À¸³ª, Áö±ÝÀº ºÏÇÑÀ¸·Î ³Ñ¾î°¬À½),
VA/VE = Canada, A, N, W =
U.S.A. (Such as AD6XI, NB2O. KE6AJ etc,)
In addition to these codes,
there are call signs. All radio stations, any kind, in the world has own
call sign which are same as names.
Just as HLKA, HLKB for Korean broadcasting stations, JOAK, JOBK for Japanese
broadcasting stations.
The first one or two letters represent the nationality. HL, DS, 6K represent
Korea. W. K. AA-AL represent U.S.A. JA-JS = Japan.
Only ham radio station has one number after these nationality codes, usually
representing more detailed location.
HL1 = Seoul, HL5 = Kyungsang Province. W1=Northeastern states of
U.S.A. such as NH, RI etc. AA4=Florida, K6=California
One, 2 or 3 letters after these numbers are called suffix and represents
each individual stations.
KE6AJ : KE =U.S.A. KE6 = California KE6AJ = My
ham radio Station. There is no any other radio station with KE6AJ in the
world.
Therefore, we use this call sign instead of his/her name. There could be
same names for another persons but no same call sign in the world.
A few prefixes (Nationality
codes) : HL/DS/6K = Korea, W/K/AA-AL = U.S.A.
VA/VE = Canada JA-JS = Japan
HM was the prefix of Korea earlier but it represents North Korea now.

We started the day from Albany, NY at 09:00 AM and
moved around Boston, MA. We went to Quincy Market of Boston to visit Durgin
Park restaurant where I visit whenever I go to Boston area. This is not a
park but a Lobster restaurant established in 1826 with more than 100 years
of history. The menu says
- Your Grandfather, and perhaps your great
grandfather, dined with us too. This is not a high class restaurant but
expensive as high class restaurant and they don't take reservation. Just

my work for KARL, met HM1AB there and married. I have really loved her but
she passed away early due to lime disease last year.

Today, we left Milford Hotel at 07:13 AM, very
early, to visit ARRL (American Radio Relay League = American Ham Radio Club)
on the way to New York. I have wanted to visit ARRL once since long time ago
and finally made it this time. ARRL HQ is open to every visitors and a
volunteer will guide you if you arrive there by 09:00 AM or 13:00 PM of any
working days. We arrived at 08:45 AM and we were only visitors today.
However, volunteer W1CNI OM took us and guided whole facility very kindly.

road to his house was just like a mountain road with very tall trees on both
sides of the road. we were very close friends in Korea too and met both
couple every time we have visited New York area. This was the first time to
visit his QTH. After arrival, I found his backyard is very wide surrounded
by very tall trees - higher than 50 ft mostly. It was right place for high

intention to install high steel tower.

We have enjoyed talking until 17:00 PM and went to
nearby Korean restaurant for dinner together. I wonder it was intentional to
make it interesting or they were too stupid, but the name of the restaurant
"Hamheung" was "Hamung" in Korean and "Homung" in Englsidh. hi hi

We drove to KF0BI today who lives at the western
part of New Jersey state. We left Fort Lee at 10:00 AM in the morning. The
rain dropped when we left Fort Lee, became heavier in 5 min. and became very
heavy rain soon. I could not not see even about 10m in front. Because we
have to avoid snow in Canada, we have to travel in June, July or Aug. and,
during this summer season, heavy rain is inevitable usually. However, we met
heavy rain at country side usually and this was the first time in big city
with so many cars in freeway. It was really hard driving for about 30 min.
but it was changed to blue sky when we approached to KF0BI's QTH.

When we arrived to KF0BI's QTH, KF0BI couple and
his mother from Korea welcomed us. We started rag chew (Talking) for a
while, went up to upstairs to his ham radio shack and heard VE3HLM/ex-HM1AX
in Ottawa was talking to NB2O in New York. We broke in to the QSO and joined
to them. However, signal of VE3HLM in Ottawa was loud and clear but from
NB2O in New York was too weak to understand. Even though NB2O has best
equipment and great antenna nearby but the signal could not beat the band
condition. Therefore, we said hello to VE3HLM and quit the QSO with them.
KF0BI has antenna just at the top of Balcony though it was higher from the
ground for 7 & 3.5MHz bands. He was also making scheduled QSOs with NB2O,
VE3HLM and AA2BA mostly.

The backyard of KF0BI was similar to AA2BA's
backyard surrounded by very tall trees, taller than 50 feet mostly and was
very suitable for antenna tower but it seemed he was not thinking to install
tall antenna tower either. We talked until 15:00 PM taking wonderful lunch
prepared by his mother and his XYL and mother joined to our rag chew later.
I was told his XYL has ham radio license but does not operate station. We
left at around 15:00 PM after very enjoyable visit today. MNI THX KF0BI OM.

After we return to Fort Lee, I bought the dinner to
HM1AM's cousin couple in appreciation for our lodging in their house for 5
days. Next day on 7/25, we had a dinner with my cousin Dong-Wook Cho couple
as the last event in New York this time.
