On the second day
(7/13), before leaving Myers Flat, Jane and D.I. visited a tunnel tree
called the "Shrine Drive-Thru Tree," which was located very close
to the motel. Later in the drive, they encountered another tunnel tree, the
"Tour-Thru Tree," at Klamath on Highway 101.
In the summer of 1974, one year after the Cho family had moved to the U.S.,
they had taken a trip to Eureka and Redding, where they visited a tunnel
tree called the "Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree". This was more than
30 years ago, and Jane and D.I. could not remember where it was, other than
that it was somewhere around Eureka. D.I. searched through the sightseeing
brochures at the motel and finally found out where it is located: it
is at Leggett, where Highway 1 and Highway 101 meet. It was 40 miles south
of where they were; they had passed it the previous day on the way to Myers
Flat. It seemed too much trouble to drive back 40 miles just to see it, so
they gave up and moved on.
