Florida Trip - 2012

Part-1  :  Going

We left home around 10:00 AM on 3/4, Sunday, and arrived at 4:30 PM at Johnny's house in Los Angeles. We met Mr./Mrs. Hyung-Suk Song, former ham in Korea (Call Sign HM1CG), and had a dinner together at Chosun Galbee in Korean Town in L. A.

우리는 3/4 일요일 오전 10시경에 집을 떠나, Los Angeles에 있는 중구네 집에 도착 한것이 오후 4시반경. 거기서 옛날에 한국에서 아마츄어무선을 하든 송형석씨 (호출부호 HM1CG)를 만나서, L. A.의Korea Town에 있는 조선갈비집에 가서 함게 저녁식사를 했다

Next morning, the 2nd. day - 3/5, we had a breakfast with Johnny together and left L. A. at around 9:00 AM and headed for Phoenix, AZ. On the way to Phoenix, we passed Palm Springs, CA, and were amazed of so many wind power generators there. I don't know when they have installed so many generators (countless. hundreds? thousands?) as I don't remember I saw them when we visited there last time several years ago.

둘째날인 3/5 아침에는 중구와 함께 아침식사를 같이하고, 아침 9시경에 L.A.를 떠나. Arizona주의 Phoenix로 향했는데, Phoenix로 가는 도중에 California의 Palm Spring을 지나갔는데, 언제 그렇게 많은 풍력발전탑을 세웠는지?, 수백? 아니 수천?의 세일수도 없는 풍력발전탑이 있어 놀랐다. 불과 수년전에 여기를 지나며 보았는데, 비교가 안되는 숫자였다.

In Phoenix, we stayed one night at Mr. Yoon-Keun Choi's home, who was also an ham in Korea (Call Sign HM1AC - he used phonetic code of HM1 Arizona Cowboy). We were very sorry to know that his wife, with whom we had dinner together only 4 years ago when we stayed a night in her house during another cross-continent trip through Canada, has passed away in the last Jan. by cancer. The following picture was taken 4 years ago at the backyard of their home when we stayed in their home and she seemed to be very healthy, though she was sick already at that time.

Phoenix에서는 최윤근 OM댁에서 하루밤을 잤는데, 그 또한 한국에서 HM1AC의 호출부호를 받아서 아마츄어무선국을 운영하면서, 자기 호출부호를 Phonetic Code로 "HM1 Arizona Cowboy"라고 흘려 일약 인기가 있었는데, 미국에 외서 진짜로 "Arizona Cowboy"가 되어 더욱 유명해졌다. 그러나 이번에 최OM댁을 방문하여 놀란것은, 불과 4년전에 방문하였을 때에는 건강한듯 싶었든 XYL(부인)이, 지난1월에 암으로 돌아가셨다는 소식이었다. 여기 보여드리는 사진은 4년전에 이집에 하루밤을 자면서, 이집 뒷마당에서 찍은 사진으로, XYL이 매우 건강해 보였는데, 그때 이미 암환자였다고 한다.

Arizona와 Texas를 연결하는 10번 고속도로인데, 사진에서 보는것 처럼 직선도로인데 차가 별로 많지 않다.

On the 3rd. day - 3/6, we left Mr. Choi's home at 9:10 AM and drove to El Paso, TX. We arrived El Paso little early at 5:10 PM, checked in to Holiday Inn Express and I have found one problem - short breath at high altitude. I have experienced this short breath just once many years ago when I stayed a night at a motel in Rocky Mountains, just east of Salt Lake City. This is caused by lung capacity problem due to my smoking for long time. I checked at the front desk how high the altitude of El Paso is and was told it is about 4,000 feet. I need few deep breath when I feel this problem. It is not a serious problem but inconvenient anyway. Next day, it was little better at Kerrville, TX, but I was told it is still around 3,000 ft.

After we stayed the night at Kerrville on 3/7, the 4th. day, we left Kerrville at 09:40 AM on 3/8 and drove to Austin, TX, through San Antonio. There is Samsung wafer fabrication plant in Austin, where I have worked about a year just before my retirement from there and Mr. Min-Ho Tan, who worked for me at Quality Assurance Center of Samsung Semiconductors in Korea, is working his own business in Austin after retirement from Samsung. We visited his office and had a lunch together at Shilla Restaurant in Austin.

제 3일 째인 3/6. 우리는 최윤근OM의 댁을 아침 9시10분경에, Texas의 El Paso를 향해 떠나서, 조금 일찍이 오후 5시10분경에 도착했다. 도착하는대로 Holiday Inn Express에 Check in하였는데, 한가지 문제가 생겨났다, - 높은 고도로 생겨나는 희박한 공기이다. 나는 지금까지 딱 한번, 여러해 전에 Salt Lake City를 지나서 하루밤을 Rocky산맥에서 자면서 겪었었는데, 이것은 오래동안의 흡연으로 폐활량이 축소되면서 일어나는 현상이다. 모텔의 Front Desk에서 고도를 알아보니 약 4,000 feet란다. 이것은 심각한 문제는 아니나, 심호흡을 하여야하며, 다음날 Texas의 Kerrville에 내려온 후에는 많아 완화가 되었다. 그러나 아직도 고도가 3,000 ft란다.

Kerrville에서 3/7 하루밤을 지나고, 3/8 아침 9시40분에 San Antonio를 거쳐 Texas의 면샤 Texas의 Austin으로 향했다. Austin에는 삼성반도채공장이 있어, 내가 은퇴하기 약1년전에 거기서 근무한 곳이고, 한국에서 내 밑에서 품질보증부에서 일하든 단민호씨가,

지금은 자기회사를 경영하고 있어, 그의 사무실을 방문하고, 함께 신라식당에 가서 점심을 같이하기도 했다.

After the lunch with Mr. Tan, we drove to Houston, TX, and visited Mr. Eun-Sang Yoon who was also an ham in Korea. He didn't have own ham station but founded/operated Hanyang University Club Station HL2AG. We had a great evening talking all kinds of old/new subjects and enjoyed a night in his home on 3/8, the 5th. day night.

점심후에는 Texas주의 Houston에 있는 윤은상씨를 만나러 갔는데, 그도 한국에서 아마츄어무선을 했지만, 자기 개인무선국 허가는 받지 않았고, 한양공대에 설치된 단체무선국 (호출부호 HL2AG)을 이용하였었다. 우리는 저녁식사를 함께하면서 재미 있는 옛이야기의 꽃을 피었고, 그날 저녁은 윤OM집에서 잤다.

The problem was the next day - 3/9, the 6th. day - driving from Houston to Mobile, Alabama. When I lived in Austin, I have experienced enough that all Texan drivers like to drive left lane regardless he drives fast or slow and what he drives - passenger car? truck? Because everyone is driving at left lane, you have to pass from right lane where many slow cars are blocking to pass. It seems this kind of driving habit is not in Texas only, but all in southeastern states. Especially in Louisiana, there were signs of "TRUCKS USE LEFT LANE". What a stupid rule it is !! Because of this crazy stupid driving in addition to so many traffics, especially trucks, I have never had so hard day to drive U.S. highways, as the passing was so difficult and I could not just follow trucks. It took 2 additional hours than I have planned on this day arriving late at 7:00 PM to Mobile and we were very tired when we checked in to the hotel.

그런데 문제는 여행 제6일째인 다음날 3/9에 Houston에서 Alabama주의 Mobile에 가는 도중에 있었다. 내가Austin에 살고 있을 때에, 모든 Texas운전자들은 빠른 차를 운전하건, 느린차를 운전하건, 승용차를 운전하건, 트럭을 운전하건, 모두 좌측운전을 하고 있었다. 따라서 느린차를 추월하려면, 언제나 오른쪽 차선을 이용해야했다. 이런 운전 습관은, Texas뿐만이 아니고, 동남방의 모든주에서 그러했고, 특히 Louisiana에서 심하여, "트럭은 왼쪽차선으로"라는 표지판이 붙어있었다. 이런 미련한 표지판을 어떻게 붙일수 있는지? 교통량은 많은 곳에서 이런 미련한 표지판이 붙어았고, 특히 트럭이 많은곳에 이런것이 있으니, 트럭의 뒤만 따라도 없고, .... 결국 오늘은 예상보다 2시간이 더 걸려 7시가 넘어서 Mobile에 도착했고, 우리가 호텔에 check in하고나니 모두 녹초가 되버려 있었다.존재하지 않는 이미지입니다.

The next morning on 3/10, we have planned to spend the morning time at famous Bellingrath Garden which is not too far from Mobile and drive down to Apopka in the afternoon. However, we were too tired, gave up the visit of this flower garden and drove directly to Apopka leaving Mobile at 08:20 AM. The road situation was much better for Mobile-Apopka driving and we arrived to Apopka at 6:00 PM, driving 2,988 miles in 7 days.

다음날인 3/10 아침에는 Mobile에서 머지 않고 유명한 Bellingrath Garden에 갔다가, 오후에 Apopka로 가려고 했었으나, 이 유명한 꽃밭의 관광은 포기하고, 아침 8시반에 일찍이 Apopka를 향하여 직행하기로 하고 떠났고, Mobile-Apopka의 교통량이 어제보다는 조금 적어, Apopka에 오후 6시에 도착할수 있었다.
