We are going to
drive around North American Continent again - our 9th. drive around - during
7/6 - 8/6 (one month). By this driving, we will achieve 18 times of crossing
the continent. We would like to have another one next year to achieve 10
times of driving around the continent in our life, though we are not sure
whether we could do it next year or not ??????

As this trip was the same
trip as the last year to visit Korean ham radio friends, there are some ham
radio languages which can not be understood by non-ham readers. They look
like secret codes but they are not. They are all official telegraphic codes
used by all radio operators including commercial radio operators too. There
are two kinds of codes - one is telegraphic codes (abbreviations) and
Q-codes, both just to make telegraphic transmissions shorter and easier.
Here are a few of them used very frequently by ham radio operators.
YL - Young Lady (This does
not mean by age. All women are YLs. There is no code of OL=Old Lady. Why?
ask to ladies)
XYL = ex-YL. Previously YL Now "Wife".
OM = Old Man (Not old men by age, but by ham radio experience. This is also
used as Mr. to all men.)
YM/YB = Young Man/Young Boy (Again. Not by age, but by experience. there
could be 80 years old YB and 20 Years old OM)
73 = Good bye to Men. 88 = Good bye to women. (Sources of origin -
unknown)
hi hi = pronounced "hai hai". Laughing or smiling.
QSO = Contact/Talking,
QSY=Move, QTH=Location/Address, QRV=Ready, QRT=Stop/Discontinue,
QRX=Wait etc. etc.

HL, DS, 6K = Korea (HM = 1960³â´ëÀÇ Ãʱ⿡´Â Çѱ¹ÀÇ ÀüÄ¡ºÎÈ£¿´À¸³ª, Áö±ÝÀº ºÏÇÑÀ¸·Î ³Ñ¾î°¬À½),
VA/VE = Canada, A, N, W =
U.S.A. (Such as AD6XI, NB2O. KE6AJ etc,)
In addition to these codes,
there are call signs. All radio stations, any kind, in the world has own
call sign which are same as names.
Just as HLKA, HLKB for Korean broadcasting stations, JOAK, JOBK for Japanese
broadcasting stations.
The first one or two letters represent the nationality. HL, DS, 6K represent
Korea. W. K. AA-AL represent U.S.A. JA-JS = Japan.
Only ham radio station has one number after these nationality codes, usually
representing more detailed location.
HL1 = Seoul, HL5 = Kyungsang Province. W1=Northeastern states of
U.S.A. such as NH, RI etc. AA4=Florida, K6=California
One, 2 or 3 letters after these numbers are called suffix and represents
each individual stations.
KE6AJ : KE =U.S.A. KE6 = California KE6AJ = My
ham radio Station. There is no any other radio station with KE6AJ in the
world.
Therefore, we use this call sign instead of his/her name. There could be
same names for another persons but no same call sign in the world.
A few prefixes (Nationality
codes) : HL/DS/6K = Korea, W/K/AA-AL = U.S.A.
VA/VE = Canada JA-JS = Japan
HM was the prefix of Korea earlier but it represents North Korea now.

We left home for the 9th trip driving around North
American Continent finally. On the first day, we drove to Grants Pass of
Oregon, right north of California/Oregon border. We left home at 09:06 in
the morning and arrived there at 17:43, taking 8 hours and 37 min.. We drove
445 miles or 712 km. However, it includes about one hour of time spent to
take lunch, to fill the gas to the car, a few coffee breaks and about 30
min. of delay due to the road works on the way. Therefore actual driving
hours were about 7 hours and 15 min..

I have lowered my antenna as shown in the pictures
before we left home. The 2nd picture is the beautiful Mt. Shasta with white
snow on the top in this summer. The 3rd. picture shows many many cars on
Highway-5 due to road work which delayed us for about half an hour. The 4th.
is the wonderful restaurant "Taprock" in Grants Pass in the middle of
mountain city. We always enjoy a great dinner in this restaurant when we
drive around the continent.

The D-Star (Digital Super Technology for Amateur
Radio. Newly developed ham radio communication technology using internet)
was connected to Internet channel 82B and 82C in the morning and I talked
with AB6XI OM in L.A. in the morning, and 6K5CRZ in Korea and KM6WL in L.A.
in the afternoon connecting to Channel 71C. Internet was disconnected vey
frequently during the driving as there were many places with too weak
internet signal. There were places with very strong noises. Once internet is
disconnected , I could not reset it while I am driving at high speed on the
freeway (70-80 MPH). I was very happy to talk with 6K5CRZ in Korea and KM6WL
in L.A. while I was driving Shasta mountain roads.

The 2nd. day of this trip was a very hard day. The
original plan was to leave hotel at 8:00 AM, to arrive ex-HM1CC QTH by 17:00
PM, stay there for 2 nights and have a BBQ lunch on 7/8 with VA7YM OM
couples from Vancouver and KD1U OM couples from Seattle. However, due to a
trouble of the car, we could not arrive to HM1CC QTH on the day, had to stay
at Everett at the north of Seattle and arrive HM1CC QTH on the next day
morning. Because of this hard day, I thought I will never have this kind of
trip again. hi hi

The trouble started about 2 hours after we left
hotel at 08:09 on schedule, when we were traveling about 165 miles north of
California-Oregon border line. Jane drove the car for a while, I took a nap
meantime and I started to drive the car. As I had a nap, I wanted to have a
cup of coffee. We saw a sign of coffee shop and took a exit. There was a
motel and coffee shop but they were all closed. It look like the whole area
is out of business and all shops have been closed down. Therefore, I turned
the car back to Highway-5. Right before the entrance, I am not sure what
happened but have heard big explosion sound. The car was still shaky even
after we got into highway. I stopped car and found rear right tire was
exploded by something unknown, which is very unusual damage for the tubeless
tire.

I had no choice but to stop the car at roadside and
called AAA Emergency Road Service. However, I could not explain exactly
where I am. I used Google Map of my Smartphone to find out where I am and
explained the location to AAA officer but it took more than 30 min. just AAA
officer to understand I am in Oregon state, not in California where I am the
member of AAA. Now, AAA officer had to call AAA Oregon office to arrange an
Emergency Car. I think there ia some kind of bureaucracy and it took one and
half hour for an Emergency Car to arrive. And, we just had to wait, wait and
wait.....

Meantime, a car passing by stopped and a gentleman
driving the car asked us what is the problem. I explained the situation. He
and his friend took tools from their car and changed my tire with spare tire
in the trunk. It was really a wonderful kind help and I gave $60 (That was
all cash I had) to express my heartfelt appreciation but they have refused
to receive. I have insisted again and again and they have finally took it
and left. What a wonderful kind young men they were!! When I was going to
leave the site finally after one and half hours delay, AAA car has finally
arrived and he just had to turn around doing nothing.

After we wasted one and half hour this way, we
arrived Portland, the largest city in Oregon. It would usually take only
20-25 min. if there is no many cars. However, we arrived at the busiest rush
hour around 15:00 PM and the cars just didn't move. It took more than one
and half hour again just to pass through Portland city. When we arrived near
Seattle, It was already almost 6:00 PM. There was no way to arrive on
schedule. We took dinner at Tacoma city, just south of Seattle. Now, we were
informed another problem of the day. HM1CC called us and said a ship of the
car ferry to Whidbey Island where HM1CC lives, became in-operational and we
have to wait more than 3 hours at the terminal. Well, it seems we can not
arrive any earlier than 10:00 PM and we gave up to go to here house today.

We stayed one night at the nearby hotel in Seattle
side on the day and went to ferry terminal next morning (7/8) after we have
learned ferry returned to the normal operation. We arrived HM1CC's QTH at
09:00 in the morning of the next day, not too late for our BBQ lunch plan.
VA7YM couple drove down from Vancouver arriving before noon and KD1U OM
couple arrived little after 12:00 noon with their 2nd harmonics (daughter).
We had BBQ of beef and pork and really enjoyed talking each other until
16:00 PM.

HM1CC is a junior of HM1AM at Ehwa University and
the 4th. YL ham in Korea. She came to U.S.A., lived near Chicago, met
current husband Mr. Wayne Nehrlich of German blood and married him. They
bought the 3 acres land in this Whidbey Island after Mr. Nehrlich retired,
built the current house and lived there for more than 10 years now. They
have welcome signs at the entrance of the home in 3 languages as shown in
the picture.

Thanks) and 73/88 to HM1CC couple at 08:40 in the morning to see them about
2.5 months later when we make a trip to Korea. Today's destination is Chase,
just the middle point between Vancouver and Banff, where VA7ABP/ex-HL2ABP is
operating a small gas station, motel and snack shop on the Canadian
Highway-1 to cross the Canada from Vancouver to Toronto.

Previously, Vancouver - Banff was the hardest
driving day as there was no place to stay a night. I had to drive a single
lane very winding road to climb the Canadian rocky Mountains for whole day
for 11-12 hours. Whenever, I see a passing lane, I pushed accelerator in
full to pass as many as cars possible. However, VA7ABP OM was introduced by
HL1GN OM and VA7ABP OM welcome us very much to stay a night in his motel,
free of charge, hi hi. As the driving distance became to half on the day, it
became so easy from last year. This year, I have contacted VA7ABP OM and he
welcome me again.

When I drove last year, I found Vancouver - Chase
was improved to 2 lanes mostly and 3 lanes in many places. Speed limit was
120km/h (75MPH) and found almost no car as all cars were driving so fast. It
was not a hard course any more but really a easy driving section. However, I
found this year, the improvement could not be progressed any further because
the road has to pass Canadian Indian Reservation area and Canadian Indians
are asking too much money to allow the wider roads. hi hi

Any way, as there are so many cars passing this
Canadian Highway-1 but no gas station for long distances to both direction,
he was so busy always and we had no time to talk until the station is closed
at the evening. He was operating this business with his XYL and her younger
sister. However, in September after we visited in July last year, his XYL
became sick. Doctors in Vancouver could not find right cause of the sickness
and she went VA7ABP OM's brother who is a doctor in Korea. After very
intensive check-up, it was found she has a cancer. She returned to Vancouver
where her daughter lives to get treatment and he was told she is improving
very well. However, it is too hard to operate the business without his XYL
and it is on sale now for two months. However, there is no one who wants to
buy the business yet as it is little too big business to run alone. If I
make another run of crossing Canada trip next year, I might not have a motel
to stay. However, I wish he could sell the business ASAP and go to his XYL
in Vancouver to take care of her.

Vancouver - Chase section of Canadian Highway-1
driven yesterday was so easy to drive with 2 or 3 lanes. However Chase -
Banff section driven today was still a single lane winding climbing very
hard road to drive as before. We had just to follow slow moving trucks and
campers most of the time. In addition, there were many road works going on
where we were stopped quite a period for one-way passing. Yesterday, we
drove 352 miles in 6.5 hours but it took 8 hours 12 min. to drive 370 miles
today, almost 2 more hours. Now, hard driving is over and we will drive
wonderful 2 lanes freeway and we can enjoy the driving from tomorrow.

We arrived Calgary where VE6CGX/ex-HM1AY lives at
15:30 PM by PDST but Calgary is a part of Albert Province which uses MDST
which is one hour earlier than PDST. We lost one hour and arrived at 16:30
PM by local time. As soon as we arrive Calgary, we checked in to the hotel
and drove to VE6CGX's QTH to see Hwang OM. We met him every time whenever we
visited Canada and we went to a Korean restaurant "Migarak" this time which
sounded like a Chinese restaurant. We have enjoyed talking a lot while
having dinner. His XYL was working in their business and could not see her
this time.

Canadian Highway-1 enjoying the scenes passing by but would not see any
Korean hams for 4 days until we arrive Toronto.
