crossing 18 times.   7/6 - 8/6, 2017

(Part-2   Á¦2ºÎ)

We are going to drive around North American Continent again - our 9th. drive around - during 7/6 - 8/6 (one month). By this driving, we will achieve 18 times of crossing the continent. We would like to have another one next year to achieve 10 times of driving around the continent in our life, though we are not sure whether we could do it next year or not ??????

As this trip was the same trip as the last year to visit Korean ham radio friends, there are some ham radio languages which can not be understood by non-ham readers. They look like secret codes but they are not. They are all official telegraphic codes used by all radio operators including commercial radio operators too. There are two kinds of codes - one is telegraphic codes (abbreviations) and Q-codes, both just to make telegraphic transmissions shorter and easier. Here are a few of them used very frequently by ham radio operators.

YL - Young Lady (This does not mean by age. All women are YLs. There is no code of OL=Old Lady. Why? ask to ladies)
XYL = ex-YL. Previously YL Now "Wife".
OM = Old Man (Not old men by age, but by ham radio experience. This is also used as Mr. to all men.)
YM/YB = Young Man/Young Boy (Again. Not by age, but by experience. there could be 80 years old YB and 20 Years old OM)
73 = Good bye to Men.  88 = Good bye to women. (Sources of origin - unknown)
hi hi = pronounced "hai hai". Laughing or smiling.

QSO = Contact/Talking,  QSY=Move,  QTH=Location/Address, QRV=Ready,  QRT=Stop/Discontinue, QRX=Wait etc. etc.

VA/VE = Canada,         A, N, W = U.S.A. (Such as AD6XI, NB2O. KE6AJ etc,)

In addition to these codes, there are call signs. All radio stations, any kind, in the world has own call sign which are same as names.
Just as HLKA, HLKB for Korean broadcasting stations, JOAK, JOBK for Japanese broadcasting stations.
The first one or two letters represent the nationality. HL, DS, 6K represent Korea. W. K. AA-AL represent U.S.A. JA-JS = Japan.
Only ham radio station has one number after these nationality codes, usually representing more detailed location.
HL1 = Seoul, HL5 = Kyungsang Province.  W1=Northeastern states of U.S.A. such as NH, RI etc. AA4=Florida, K6=California
One, 2 or 3 letters after these numbers are called suffix and represents each individual stations.
KE6AJ : KE =U.S.A.    KE6 = California   KE6AJ = My ham radio Station. There is no any other radio station with KE6AJ in the world.
Therefore, we use this call sign instead of his/her name. There could be same names for another persons but no same call sign in the world.

A few prefixes (Nationality codes) : HL/DS/6K = Korea,    W/K/AA-AL = U.S.A.   VA/VE = Canada    JA-JS = Japan
HM was the prefix of Korea earlier but it represents North Korea now.

Maybe due to the older age, I didn't feel tired to cross Canada until last year, but in this year, I felt it was quite a long distance for 500 miles from Calgary to Regina. The Canadian Highway-1 from Banff is always 2 lanes where I didn't see many cars - mostly less than 10 cars, or 3-4 cars many cases, though I could see quite a long distances on both directions of this flat plane. There was no village except Medicine Hat where I could have a lunch and just one or two towns where I could have coffees. Especially, the problem was there was no rest area and it was a big problem if you were urgent for rest room, especially for YL. hi hi.

It was rainy in the morning, very strong sometimes, and we had a hard time to drive the car. It was OK in the afternoon but had hard times in the morning. It was the first time in my life to set the cruise control at 80 MPH and drove the car at 80MPH (130km/h) for whole day. It was 20km/h faster speed than the speed limit of 110km/h. However, there was no town around and no patrol car on the freeway. I didn't get any speeding ticket and drove at 80MPH (130km/h) for almost 100% of the day.

It will be similar tomorrow too. But I expect more patrol cars in Ontario Province and I might not be able to drive that fast once I get into Ontario Province.

I found one convenience today. As I always stay in same Holiday Inn Express and use same notebook computer, the computer remembers Id/Password of the hotel to connect to the internet and connected to internet automatically.

I didn't use D-Star too much. I made a special contract with Verizon prior to the trip to pay $50/day to use unlimited  internet Verizon channels in Canada. However, when I drove this long freeways, there were too many places Verizon signal is too weak and the connections were broken. I could not reset the D-Star Internet connection while I was driving at such a high speed. The signal booster also had the power cable problem and did not function from the first day. In addition, I reset the D-Star and called CQ, but no answer as there was not many D-Star stations available yet. That was why I was not operating D-Star actively. Now on, I would try harder to use D-Star more actively.

There were more towns on the freeway and we could have gas stations and coffees more often. The problem was this sign board though. It shows the shops in that town regardless where they are. We went in to the town to have a coffee as it showed coffee sign, but could not find coffee shop. They should have shops close to the exit only on this board. I wonder whether this is a advisory board or advertisement board. It was just confusing the driver.

We will get in to the Ontario Province from tomorrow. There will be more cars and more patrol cars too. I have to be more cautious from tomorrow.

My Mercedez has only one key with one button and I can do every thing I need to do. However Lexus has two keys with so many buttons. First of all, they are too many to carry in the pocket with too weak buttons. In addition, you have to push "Unlock" button twice to open all doors. What a stupid unnecessary operations!! While we were driving Highway-1 in the morning, there were cars and a few towns. But when we got into Highway-17, it was a single lane road without many cars. However, the worse was there was no town (Only a few in whole day.). It would be a serious problem if you ran out of gas, and there was no place to buy a cup of coffee. Fortunately, we found a KFC and could get a lunch. But there was only a few guests at 12:00 noon. I wonder how they could make money, as there is only a few guests in 12:00 noon.

we were enjoying the beautiful scenery of many lakes in Ontario for whole day. However, almost at the end of the day, a patrol car came from opposite direction, made a U-turn and followed me blinking the lights. I stopped the car and he said I drove at 116km/h at the 90km/h zone and he had a phone call from a driver informing I was driving recklessly. I have never heard that kind of phone call story at any other place in U.S.A. and Canada, but this is the second time in Ontario (I had a same story last year in Ontario.) Fortunately, this year, he was very kind policeman and he just warned me without traffic ticket. MNI THX (Many Thanks). hi hi.

We left Calgary on 7/10, drove 4 days, 80% to cross Canada, without meeting any ham and would arrive Toronto by tomorrow to complete the crossing of Canada. It was not too hard until last year but it was hard this year as I got older. When we arrived Sault Ate. Marie, there was a shopping mall at the other side of the road and I could buy a mouse at a computer shop. We will meet ham friends and have good times from tomorrow.

We left Thunder Bay little later at 08:20 AM, drove 437 miles in 8 hours and 45 min. to arrive Sault Ste. Marie at little later than 5 PM. We drove Highway-17 by the Lake Superior for whole day which looks like an ocean. While driving, we could not see any town nor any gas station.... We crossed Canada 4-5 times but I didn't remember this was such a hard drive segment. I passed a gas station at 11:00 AM as it seemed to be too early but we found next gas station at 13:00 PM. The following gas station was found another 2 hours later and I was not aware of the hardness of driving this road in the past.

It was very strange and hard to understand that how come Highway-17 crossing the province in most advanced and busiest province with Canadian capital city in it, has still single lane only and not many town along the road yet. Highway between Banff and Winnipeg has two lanes but highway-17 in capital province is still single lane? Don't they need double or triple lanes with many gas stations, restaurants, rest areas in the capital province? I just could not understand.

Another amazing scene was bikers going up this hilly road with bike. There were YL bikers too. It was really amazing how they can ride this kind of uphill with bike. Another thing I have noticed is many advertisement boards with so many small letters. Can high speed drivers read all the messages? I doubt it.

We have finally crossed Canada which was started 7 days ago on 7/9 from Seattle. It was little boring trip on one hand but had a great feeling of accomplishment on the other hand. This morning, we left Sault Ste Marie at 07:55 AM, had a few road works delay but it was a relatively smooth driving. Especially, when we got into Highway 69 from Highway 17 in the afternoon, it was 2 lanes freeway which was extended to the Highway-400 where we could drive 100km/h speed. We could drive 427 miles in just 7 hours and 50 min. and arrived Toronto little earlier than expected. One thing I didn't like today was road workers installed poles on center line for 10 miles preventing to pass slow traffic. They were working on only less than 1 mile but why do they need to control traffic for 10 miles? We experienced blocking 2-3 miles while they were working on only 100-200 m in U.S.A. frequently, but never experienced 10 miles of blocking ever. Was this really necessary or did they do it for a fun? hi hi

We had this kind of problem but could arrive Toronto earlier than expected. We checked in to the hotel first, took a short rest and drove to VE3NV's QTH. I thought it is a short distance when I make the hotel reservation, but it was a quite a distance in 17:00 PM rush hour actually. We had to drive 26 miles to arrive VE3NV's QTH. When we arrived, VE3NV couples really welcome us and VE3NV's XYL VE3IYL had wonderful dinner prepared for us. We really appreciated for the kindness, enjoyed the rag chew (talking) taking dinner and expressed 88/73 to them after dinner. We will meet again tomorrow at the BBQ party of VE3KRC (The Call Sign of Toronto area Korean ham club's club station. KRC=Korean Radio Club) in the nearby park. MNI MNI THX VE3KRC !!
